Ioane Bagrationi – The Explanatory Dictionary of Natural Science | Georgian USSR Book, 1986

The Explanatory Dictionary of Natural Science – Ioane Bagrationi (1986)

A vintage Soviet Georgian academic publication presenting an important early nineteenth-century work of natural science and historical lexicography.

Compiled by Georgian scholar and encyclopedist Ioane Bagrationi (1768–1830), the original dictionary was completed in 1814 and contains more than 3,000 terms related to zoology, botany, geology, and the natural world.

The dictionary combines Russian headwords with Latin, Georgian, and Turkish equivalents, accompanied by extensive explanations in Georgian.

Beyond its scientific vocabulary, the work provides historical insight into the development of natural science, traditional folk medicine, and scholarly terminology in the Caucasus.

Published in Tbilisi in 1986 by Metsniereba under the Georgian SSR Academy of Sciences, this edition was prepared by Tina Enukidze and Nana Kiknadze.
